THE NUTRITION NORTH PROGRAM YET ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE FAILURE

OTTAWA – Yesterday, the Auditor General confirmed what northerners have known for quite some time: the Nutrition North program, designed to fight the high cost of food in northern areas, has failed. Conservative mismanagement was cited in the report for having seriously compromised the program.

The Auditor General emphasized that it was impossible to know whether it had truly benefitted consumers without the minister making the appropriate inquiries.

“The report showed that the Nutrition North program is simply not working—so where is the money going? Obviously people in northern regions aren’t reaping the benefits and there is a serious lack of transparency,” said NDP MP Romeo Saganash (Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou).

The AG’s report concluded that the program had failed to assist communities in need and didn’t make healthy food a priority.

“While retailers pocket the subsidies, northern residents continue to pay up to ten times more for a litre of milk than most Canadian citizens. What are the Conservatives waiting for to fix the situation? Northerners deserve better,” added MP Saganash.
