Saganash Denounces Conservative Inaction on Aboriginal Housing
June 22nd, 2012 - 12:56pm
Val-d’Or — On this National Aboriginal Day, MP Romeo Saganash condemned the fact that over half the housing units in First Nations communities are contaminated with mould, a situation that has only worsened since the Conservatives came to power.
“Problems with education and housing have been on the rise under this minister’s watch,” said Mr. Saganash today in Question Period. “What is happening in Attawapiskat is just a symptom of a much larger crisis across the country.”
Mr. Saganash said that Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development John Duncan is completely disconnected from the situation and is unable to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal peoples living in third-world conditions.
“Seeing that incompetence, why should Aboriginal peoples trust the Minister to resolve the national crisis that is striking them?” wondered Mr. Saganash.
One of the largest ridings in the country, Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou has many Aboriginal communities and villages where residents are paying for the Minister’s inaction. Romeo Saganash is planning to visit several of these communities this summer in order to get a sense of what residents are concerned about.
