NDP MPs BELIEVE REGION NOT RECEIVING FAIR SHARE OF ACCESSIBILITY FUND
Romeo Saganash and Christine Moore encourage small businesses and organizations to submit applications by January 20

VAL-D’OR/ROUYN-NORANDA – NDP MPs Romeo Saganash (Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou) and Christine Moore (Abitibi–Témiscamingue) believe that the region is not receiving its fair share of Employment and Social Development Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund. They want to ensure eligible organizations and businesses submit applications by the January 20 deadline.
“The last time funding was distributed under the Fund, 85% went to Conservative ridings. This is unacceptable and clearly favoritism. Quebec as a whole received only 2% of the Enabling Accessibility Fund. Organizations and businesses in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Baie-James and the Cree and Inuit communities of Northern Quebec also need to have access to such grants,” said Saganash.
For projects to receive funding, they must be directly related to maintaining or creating job opportunities for people with a mobility impairment. Grants may be used to construct, renovate or retrofit workplaces to make them accessible and functional for people with disabilities. They may also be used to modify vehicles. Finally, the Fund offers grants for providing information and communications technologies for work use.
“The timelines are extremely short, and it seems strange to us that the deadline is so soon after the holidays. In any case, we believe it is important that the region’s businesses and organizations, which strive to make good jobs accessible to people with disabilities, can benefit from the Enabling Accessibility Fund. Remember, the Fund was created to help small businesses and non-profit organizations,” explained Moore.
