FOREST FIRES IN NORTHERN QUÉBEC: SAGANASH SUPPORTS MAYOR OF MATAGAMI

VAL-D’OR - MP Romeo Saganash (Abitibi-Baie-James-Nunavik-Eeyou) is backing the Mayor of Matagami, René Dubé, in calling on the Government of Quebec to come to help of Nord-du-Québec as it deals with the massive forest fires.

Today, July 5, Mr. Dubé is calling on the Quebec government to take action to ensure the safety of the communities that are becoming isolated by the fires.

“The situation is extremely worrisome. Entire communities risk being cut off from the rest of the province if nothing is done”, said Mr. Saganash.

In addition to the fire that forced the evacuation of the community of Eastmain, Goldcorp’s Éléonore mining project site and the Hydro-Québec camps, a new fire started in the Wemindji area, creating more cause for concern. Total damages could exceed several thousands of dollars. However, beyond the material cost, the isolation of the communities in crisis is what concerns the MP the most.

“We are following developments closely. What is happening in that region affects my entire riding. It is worrisome from a human, material, and economic perspective”, said Saganash.
