COST OF LIVING IN NORTH: ROMEO SAGANASH CRITICIZES CONSERVATIVE INDIFFERENCE
October 2nd, 2012 - 2:52pm
Val-d’Or — New Democrat MP Romeo Saganash (Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou) strongly criticized the Conservative government’s indifference to the high cost of living in the North, today in the House of Commons.
“I have the pleasure of representing one of the largest ridings in Canada, which means I have a lot of communities to visit,” said Saganash. “But all of them have the same problem: the rising food costs and cost of living in the North.”
The Conservatives abruptly ended the food mail program, without any consultation with citizens affected by this decision. “There is a reason why 20,000 people joined a Facebook group called “Feeding my Family,” a movement looking to find solutions to this problem.”
Unfortunately, the only response by the government to this crisis is pure indifference, said Saganash. “The prime minister visited the North, but continues to ignore the problem. New Democrats believe the North cannot achieve its full potential until those who live there have access to quality affordable food. It’s time the Conservatives took this issue seriously in the best interest of all NorthernCanadians.”
